Ke$ha Breaks Thru to the Big-Time

September 1st, 2010
Ke$ha is, with no question, one of the largest breakout stars of 2010. A slurring, whisking, hard-partying pop oddity ( who can also be a genius ) with an one album and a shipload of hit singles to her name, not to mention more than a couple of enemies. She even has under her star-spangled belt, her own, extraordinarily public WTF cock up as a slightly, uh, divisive “Saturday Night Live” performance. Ever since Ke$ha came stumbling into our lives last year with “Tik Tok” ( we named it one of the finest Songs of 2009, incidentally ), she has been nothing if not habitually entertaining, if a little confounding.
She’s always coming back with another huge single or eye-popping video, always asserting or wearing something ghastly. In the midst, she is made an indelible effect on popular culture and, earlier in the month, MTV showed its recognition of that fact, rewarding her with multiple Video Music Award proposals, including nods for Best Female Video and Best New Artist. But how did she go from unknown pop curio to one of the fastest-rising starlets in the world? Here is a look back : In Jan 2010, “Tik Tok” rose to one on the Poster advertisement hot hundred, setting a record for digital downloads in the procedure.
That very same month, she was named one of three female Artists to look at, as a part of MTV Reports ‘ Pop Week 2010. Buoyed by the successfulness of “Tik Tok,” Ke$ha’s first album, Animal, opened at one on the Poster advertisement albums chart, selling more than 152,000 copies and terminating “Britain’s Got Talent” phenom Susan Boyle’s six-week run at one. Ke$h would hark back to Boyle straight after, declaring to MTV Stories the cat-loving vocalist “knows how to party”.

The Hidden West Coast of America

February 23rd, 2009

When most people around the world think of the west coast of the USA, they automatically think of California. And when most people think of California, they think of Los Angeles. But I’m here to tell those people that there is much more to the west coast than just LA or California. Oregon and Washington are two beautiful states, and both have plenty to offer the average tourist. While they may not have the palm trees, warm temperatures, or celebrity hotspots like Southern California, they make up for it with gorgeous views, breathtaking coastlines, thriving music scenes, bustling cities, and romantic getaways.

One of the many areas of these lesser known states that I want to tell you more about is the city of Portland in Oregon. It is a relatively small city but has been growing quickly in popularity, especially with the young and hip crowd. There is a great live music scene in Portland, which has brought us the likes of The Dandy Warhols, The Decemberists, The Shins, Modest Mouse, and M Ward, just to name a few. Nicknamed PDX (after the city’s airport code), Portland also boasts wonderful independent businesses. Everything from clothing shops to record labels to grocery stores, the people of Portland enjoy their indie.

Also, if you are a single girl in her twenties, watch out! There are some charming and adorable young men in Portland. But you know what they say about boys in bands: they’re nothing but trouble. I wouldn’t want you to have to get a special Portland divorce lawyer, now would I?
