Thailand: Can I Work There?

So you want to experience life in Thailand? Ordinarily when individuals think about living in Thailand, they instantly think they must take up an English teaching position to pay their way. Even though there are highly paid English teaching jobs in universities like Thammasat or Chulalongkorn, most English teaching posts aren’t terribly well paid.

As a matter of fact, don’t anticipate a leading salary for any job requiring skills, teaching or otherwise. It doesn’t sound very promising, but actually if you want to live in the Land of Smiles for a few years, such poorly paid jobs aren’t too much of a problem since Thailand is a low- priced place to live, the infrastructure is perhaps the best in this region of the world, it’s a friendly and safe country, yet you can crawl up the career ladder because you can have a great work experience in Thailand.

However there’s a hidden problem that slowly shows itself over time: you’ve been staying in Thailand for 1 or 2 years, you’ve gained good work experience, your pay is low, but then again things are cheap in Thailand so that’s OK. BUT, do you know what’s coming next? : You’ve been unable to actually BANK much money while you’ve been living in Thailand. The cost of air tickets look incredibly expensive compared to your salary. The price of things back home gets to worry you when thinking about your money earned in Thailand. This dilemma hits a lot of foreigners in Thailand a year or two after deciding to work there. Long- term plans can often be put on hold since you don’t have the savings to realise any ambition like buying a property, getting married, or even purchasing a car.

Therefore, key point : when considering living in the Land of Smiles, it’s advised to also remember that you will find it extremely challenging to bank substantial quantities of hard currency when thinking about the cost of living of “back home”.

However, it’s not all about cash is it? You can gain a wonderful experience in Thailand, perhaps acquire the language, make friends, travel around Thailand when you have time off work, and get yourself some precious overseas work experience.

So what kind of work placements can you get in Thailand? Browsing jobs-quality.com - a site listing positions in the Chonburi and Bangkok districts of Thailand - they have listed HR work placements, Administration job positions, production supervisor jobs in Thailand, safety officer job positions etc. Basically the types of work placements you’d find in your home country. Even though the majority of these work placements may be seeking a Thai speaker, there are still English-speaking requirements for work placements inside many global organizations established in Thailand.
