Thousands of Weapons to be Destroyed by Cambodian Government Next Week in Siem Reap and Sihanoukvill

February 28th, 2009

It is undeniable that Cambodia is changing. When I arrived in Cambodia in 1995, one in three Cambodians I met carried a weapon. Arms were for many the only way to ensure security. Yet, in the decennium I live in Cambodia, I have never seen one used against me or anybody, except for one: a policeman shot some game in the forest but didn’t catch it.

I’ve collected weapons. 5 years ago, I travelled to Dey Krohom village in Kratie province along roads which the year after were de-mined because the road was part of what once was the National road from Phnom Penh to Kratie and Stoeung Treng and is was going to be rebuilt into what Cambodians cal a “speedway”. I’ve seen the mines when a year later, I travelled the same road again to inspect my development projects.

Each one might have killed me. Do you know that mines tend to float under the soil and move where no-one expects any mines.

>From 2000 to 2004, I worked for the EU ASAC, an EU weapons management programme for establishing weapons security to the country. My job was to help collect weapons from the civilian population which was only a small part of a much more encompassing programme. My job also included implementing police support regarding to security as a complement to the weapons collection.

The programme was implemented on the request and with the full support of the Cambodian government. Next week, the government will destroy some 8,000 weapons and thus bring the total of destroyed weapons since the start of the EU peace plan to more than 175,000 weapons.

These weapons include not only weapons from the civilian population, but also military surpluses. Some argue that it is the oldest weapons that were destroyed, but all of the weapons in the destruction were usable. Being usable - if only for spare parts -, they could be sold on the black market and used in other conflicts in the region.

By destroying those weapons, the Cambodian people acts as true Buddhists, choosing for Peace in the Region. “Put down your weapon, take up the Dharma” edified the Buddhist Teachers. And that is what Cambodians are doing.

The EU has been the initiator of the multi-facetted peace programme. Two Japanese organisations are fulfilling the promises of European initiators: if you make peace development will come. Cambodian people have turned their weapons. JSAC and JCCP, two Japanese organisation now offer development projects to the villages, communes and districts that have surrendered all their weapons and are proven weapons-free. Clean water wells are in some places the highest priorities, elsewhere schools or school toilets were built.

The principle of the weapons collection project was not to pay for the weapons, but to offer community-owned projects instead. Every weapon that was collected from the civilian population had to be destroyed and was.

The military surplus weapons are those that are left over from the EU ASAC Weapons Registration and Safe Storage project. Here safe storage buildings for weapons and computerised registration system have been provided to the Cambodian Army and Gendarmerie.

The weapons are destroyed in public ceremonies in the presence of the population. These ceremonies are called “Flames of Peace.” EU, Cambodian or Japanese experts count the weapons as part of the process and check that no more ammunition remains in the weapon that could turn the celebration into a tragedy.

The EU assistance programme has also supported the National Committee for weapons management, the draft of a new arms law and oversees the implementation of that law.

Next week, two of those bonfires take place in Cambodia. On Monday 26 September, 3,430 weapons will be burned ceremoniously in Siem Reap province with Japanese support and on Tuesday about 4,500 in Sihanoukville with European support.

The Japanese destruction ceremony will take place in Angkor Chum district, there where the people have turned them in. The ceremony in Sihanoukville will take place on Ochheuteal Beach and is open to any visitor. If you happen to be in Sihanoukville, this is a unique occasion to witness the Cambodian contribution to peace building.

Is America Bankrupt?

February 28th, 2009

The US Dollar has been falling. The Euro, not so long ago worth 82 cents, is now at $1.20 - this is a gain of more than 40 percent in a very short time. The same goes for the Aussie Dollar: from 50 US cents to 75 US cents (that’s 50 percent up). Gold, which was trading at less than $300 per ounce for years, is now long past the $420 mark. What is happening to the greenback?

I had this interesting conversation with a gourmet coffee vendor at the Sydney Airport. Originally from Afghanistan, he arrived in Australia some 20 years ago. He is very aware to what is not been told by the mainstream media. He argues that the US is practically bankrupt - too much debt owed to foreign nations, and no means (but greenbacks) to pay back. American industry? Well - the orders are not pouring in and unemployment is on a steep rise, the jobs are just not there. Ask any unemployed person how tough it is to get a job, any job in America these days.

So - he argues - US does what empires always did - go for conquest. This hasn’t changed since the Spanish and the English did the same centuries ago. Seek out and conquer far lands for their precious treasures / assets. So now the US is control of the Iraqi oil - Oil is a real commodity - with intrinsic value, supply limited by nature (unlike paper money which can be printed) and can be sold on the open market at the going price.

Furthermore, Iraq’s infrastructure was destroyed by the war. Someone is going to rebuild it - you guessed right - corporate America , all paid for by the Iraqi Oil.

Conquest, or treasure hunt, so it seems, is a good medicine to America’s disease. Unfortunately there’s not enough of it yet under control to overcome the illness, hence the patient is still sick, dollar falls.

Iraq - they finally captured Saddam Hussein.
Afghanistan - they’re still looking for Bin Laden.
Syria - Bashar Assad is about to be overthrown.

The question is - can they repeat these tricks again? Where can they find more of the medicine? Who is next in line?

The British Sikh Army

February 27th, 2009

Britain has a proud tradition of valiant armed forces and a capable military which has managed to defend these isles effectively for hundreds of years. British Military achievement is well known throughout the world and the bravery and versatility of its soldiers, seamen and airmen is unquestioned and forever stamped in history.

Today as we look at the VE Day Celebrations there is an abundance of information in the media that provides an insight into what life would have been like in those troubled times. It is right that we remember them, the fallen, and the living whose numbers dwindle with every passing year. To them we owe our freedom as they fought for this land and often lost their lives so that we might remain a free country.

However, whilst each country has a right to blow its own trumpet and remember the heroic gestures, hardships and victories that made this nation what it is today, we should also remember the massive sacrifice given by others from nations further afield.

The Sikhs sacrificed a great deal for this country. During the Anglo-Sikh wars of 1845 - 1849 the British had been so impressed by the Khalsa Army they decided to enlist many battalions of Sikh forces. The former Sikh enemy became so loyal that in 1857 when most of the Indian Army revolted, the Sikhs remained totally supportive and fought side by side with the British Army. Subsequently, the Punjab became the recruiting ground for the British. This staunch and loyal Sikh support was to show itself again during the great wars.

During the First World War Sikhs joined the ranks of the British Army in great numbers. They fought in the trenches of Germany and at Gallipoli where thousands of Sikhs fought and died. The British Indian Army was made of nearly 20% Sikhs, despite the fact that Sikhs account for only 2% of the population in India.

During the Second World War this action was repeated. Even though there was now a quest for Indian Independence the British Indian Army grew from 189,000 at the start of the war to over 2.5 million through voluntary recruitment and a large proportion of those were Sikh. At no other time in history has a foreign army this large been voluntarily mobilised to fight for a foreign land as if it were their own country. The significance of this should not be underestimated.

In 1944, Sikh Soldiers halted the advance of the Japanese in Burma and prevented them from invading India. Four VC’s were awarded in this campaign.

As the British Empire came to a close many Sikhs were encouraged to settle in the UK. Their loyalty, hard work ethics and historic connection with the British should be remembered. Many Sikh families in Birmingham are direct descendents of those who put so much into this country.

Of course, there were also millions of Russians who died in the Second World War. One might argue that the Russians won the war and that without them things would have been significantly different. Then of course there are the 100,000 Gurkhas who fought in World War I and the 40 battalions of Gurkhas in the Second World War. What of the Polish who valiantly fought during the Battle of Britain and those from other nations who out of Patriotism and loyalty, came from oversees to enlist, and often die, in order that we might enjoy our freedom today.

Government Franchise Model; taking it virtual

February 27th, 2009

Our government is set up like a modern day franchise. Let me explain: the Federal government is the franchisor run by three sets of committees (board of directors of divisions). States are the master franchisees. Counties are the franchisees and have managers of each store (cities). Where does this leave You and I? Well we are the customers (voters).

The easiest way to do a great job in your business is to cater to the customer, that is us, THE CITIZENS. To cater to a customer you must think like the customer and act like the customer. The easiest way to do that, is to be the customer. Which, in government the best leaders come from the people. Our government is made up of us, we elect ourselves into positions we believe are suited to our abilities by our peers. A government or business which caters to the customer, voter or citizen stands the best chance in succeeding, both short and long term. An example would be this 200+ year experience we call The United States of America. Works real fine, lasts a long time.

Now as we plunge into the reality of the modern digital age, so far we have only seen its possibilities and some really cool and sometimes useful computer tools, its real benefits are only now coming to the consumer. In Business at The Speed of Thought and now many similar books, essays and discussions around the globe we are seeing this virtuality taking place in everything.

In a modern franchise system they leverage these new technologies and advances in IT to streamline the system, cut costs and allow the economies of scale to deliver more to the customer and shareholders. Wouldn’t it be great if we could take the government and make most of it a website or park it in virtual space and alleviate some of the tax payers cost and headaches from bureaucracy? Lets just leave it there. Think about it.

“Surreality” shows and deadly “Comedies”

February 27th, 2009

For those too engrossed (during the last week) by the latest hit “surreality” show, “Harriet and Scooter”, directed by those entertainment wizards, the Compassionate Conservatives, the following is a listing of some other shows that aired (but went largely unnoticed) during the week obtained from C-SPAN’s CapitalNews. It’s a partial compilation of the work of the main subsidiary of the Compassionate Conservatives- the Congress, which never fails to produce short shows, generally unseen but with a lasting impact, while the audience is tuned to the “sexy” productions.

A partial list of “episodes” (Headlines- in bold) produced during the period of 10- 25 and ending with 10- 29 follows:

House GOP Leaders: Oil Companies Should Build U.S. Refineries

(Hilarity abounds as, after forcing through two pieces of legislation with significant [around $14.5 billion in taxpayer funds] benefits for the oil industry this year, House Republican leaders call for oil companies to return the favor by building new refineries and taking other steps to increase fuel supply and lower gas prices. Red Cavaney, president of the American Petroleum Institute [with money already in hand, responds] “What we are trying to say is, tell us what you want, not how to make it happen…”)

Republicans Cut Several Programs in Budget

(Comedy that brings tears to the eyes as House Republicans voted to cut student loan subsidies, child support enforcement and aid to firms hurt by unfair trade practices as various committees scrambled to piece together $50 billion in budget cuts. Minority Democrats opposed virtually everything that was done, saying Wednesday’s actions are part of a broader GOP budget blueprint that also calls for $106 billion in new tax cuts over the next five years.)

House Panel Passes $11-Billion Medicaid Cuts

House Committee Cuts $844 Million From Food Stamp Program

(Another great comedy as, on a party-line vote, after slashing Medicaid, the Republican-run U.S. House of Representatives committee voted to cut food stamps by $844 million on Friday, just hours after a new government report showed more Americans are struggling to put food on the table.)

Senate Panel Approves $10 Billion Cut in Medicare, Medicaid

Senate Rejects Bid to Boost School Aid by $5 Billion

Senate Votes Against Increased Funding for Home Heating Program

(The Senate, getting in on the hijinks, caps off a sterling performance of taking from the poor as it, for the second time this month, voted against putting more money into a program that helps low-income families meet home heating costs. Citing budget restraints, not mentioning the oil company subsidies nor the tax cuts favoring the top 1% of the population, nor the upcoming attempt to repeal the estate tax…)

Bush, Party Faithful Gather for Fundraiser

(Great “party” scenes as President Bush gathered with his party faithful Tuesday night for a $15,000-a-couple dinner that the Republican National Committee reported raised at least $1 million. The dinner was a 30th anniversary celebration for the Republican Eagles — donors who raise at least $15,000 a year. For their contributions, the 260 attendees dined on seared mignon of beef, received a commemorative paperweight and heard a speech from the commander in chief…)

Oh, and… Rosa Parks died, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Eisenhower, and Kennedy sighed, Martin Luther King and Jesus cried.

Buying Spectacles Online

February 26th, 2009

In a nutshell, an optometrist is a health care expert who provides eye lenses based on a prescription provided by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. Corrective lenses could come in the form of either contacts or eyeglasses. The business of the optometrist is to exchange the prescription into a custom-designed opthalmic lens.

The definition could be elementary however the actual conversion takes an immense amount of discussion, skill and workmanship. An optometrist will confer with patients to create eyewear that best meet your demands by gathering information about the patient on the purpose of the specs, their level of physical activity, the necessity of protection and the configuration of facial features and the eye.

Optometrists use a miscellany of instrumentation ranging from simple measuring appliances to more complicated examination devices. This allows the ophthalmic optician to produce a custom design, fitting and dispensing of the eyewear to meet the particular needs of individual patients.

Using the prescription from an optometrist or ophthalmologist, the optometrist, they use a number of procedures and equipment that will give the necessary correction to an individual’s eyesight. Ophthalmic opticians also design and fit special lenses to correct cosmetic, traumatic or anatomical defects. Successful corrective eyewear hinges greatly on the skill and the craft of Optometrists to ensure comfort, taste preferences, functionality and design.

Ophthalmic opticians may work in a variety of areas such as independent or joint practice, hospitals, eye care centers or retail stores. Even So, registered Optometrists must work hard to meet standards of practice and training, commit to ongoing education, hold professional liability insurance and are held to these standards by their respective regulating bodies.

The most advantageous arena is to locate Optometrists who provide services within an eye care center and work along side other eye care professionals such as optometrists, ophthalmologists and technicians. These services are provided within the context of larger eye care centers and also known as “on-site optical” departments.

The advantages of an “on-site optical” department is that the optometrist has easy accessibility to other eye care professionals and co-workers, allowing the optometrist to troubleshoot any problems or obstacles that may arise from patients.

42 Years Later: Remembering JFK

February 25th, 2009

42 years ago, we sat in front of our television sets in complete shock. When the usually totally objective Walter Cronkite momentarily lost it on a live broadcast, he represented faces all over America, frozen in grief and disbelief.

It was an innocent time. Young, vigorous, charismatic, and eloquent, Jack Kennedy represented the dreams of the young. Into a political world filled with tired old detached men, he and his passionate New England intelligentsia swept like a fresh wind that promised a new world order and unlimited potential for all of us. We loved his accent, his hair, his humor, and his energy. We couldn’t wait to join the Peace Corps and remake the world.

For years, we quietly asked each other: Where were you when Kennedy was shot? We all knew exactly where we were and what we were doing when the news came. It was a moment frozen in time, a great divide between the promise that had shined so brightly and the unknown darkness that lay ahead after the light had been so prematurely extinguished.

Later, the cynicism of an ugly war, a string of assassinations, riots in the streets, and the paranoia of a secretive administration, would take their toll on our dreams, our desire to participate and to serve, and our belief in our leaders.

We put away our optimism, our social dedication, and our carefree belief in our ability to make a permanent difference. We moved into business, raised families, made money, and withdrew from the streets. We stopped marching, stopped voting, stopped caring. We lost our sense of trust and the heart in our fight for equality and peace slowly shriveled.

When I ask at work: Where were you when Kennedy was shot, I am greeted by blank stares from staff who weren’t even conceived in 1963. Despite the pain of that time, I feel deep sorrow for those who never had the opportunity to experience the excitement and euphoria of Camelot.

As the old saw states, “It is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.” We lost a great and important part of ourselves on that grassy knoll in Dallas. But we are better people for the elation he gave us, the dreams he inspired, and the deep commitment to our fellow man that he generated within us.

Those who missed that rare shining moment are, all unaware, diminished in their souls. And those of us who were lucky enough to have that spirit enter our lives, however briefly, must each mourn his death alone.

Happy trails, Jack.

The Hidden West Coast of America

February 23rd, 2009

When most people around the world think of the west coast of the USA, they automatically think of California. And when most people think of California, they think of Los Angeles. But I’m here to tell those people that there is much more to the west coast than just LA or California. Oregon and Washington are two beautiful states, and both have plenty to offer the average tourist. While they may not have the palm trees, warm temperatures, or celebrity hotspots like Southern California, they make up for it with gorgeous views, breathtaking coastlines, thriving music scenes, bustling cities, and romantic getaways.

One of the many areas of these lesser known states that I want to tell you more about is the city of Portland in Oregon. It is a relatively small city but has been growing quickly in popularity, especially with the young and hip crowd. There is a great live music scene in Portland, which has brought us the likes of The Dandy Warhols, The Decemberists, The Shins, Modest Mouse, and M Ward, just to name a few. Nicknamed PDX (after the city’s airport code), Portland also boasts wonderful independent businesses. Everything from clothing shops to record labels to grocery stores, the people of Portland enjoy their indie.

Also, if you are a single girl in her twenties, watch out! There are some charming and adorable young men in Portland. But you know what they say about boys in bands: they’re nothing but trouble. I wouldn’t want you to have to get a special Portland divorce lawyer, now would I?

Global/Israeli Corruption!

February 23rd, 2009

What depth of blind insanity has inflicted itself upon Israel’s politicians, and such as George W. Bush and Condoleeza Rice?!!??

So, in order to bring about disarray within the ranks of those opposing the Disengagement, a specially trained “Gestapo/KGB type” unit is to be deployed a week before the Withdrawal begins, to totally disarm the “settlers,” and to drag protest leaders from their beds in the middle of the night.. It would appear then, that the authorities have identified who the protest leaders are, where they reside, and the magnitude of their “threat” to the Withdrawal! Obviously, they expect a great deal of resistance!

I hope their prediction is accurate! The resistance must become even more organized, so that everyone knows what they must do, regardless of whether the protest leaders are incarcerated or not! What they fail to comprehend, is that those apprehended will in fact become hero’s, strengthening the resolve and bravery of the anti-withdrawal folk.

But what is worrisome, is the fact that police and military heavy-handed tactics are being proposed at all! Ariel Sharon obviously feels the residents of Gush Katif and the Shomron are now to be considered enemies of Israel, and are to be treated as such! But while he gives orders to incarcerate peaceful Israeli citizens who love the Land, guns are being awarded to the enemy PA, to “encourage them.” Disarm and incarcerate law-abiding, loyal citizens, and arm their enemies!! Did Sharon and his henchmen have an identity swap while they were sleeping one dark night? Have they been switched to become “Palestinians?” Or is it perhaps what they have been eating for breakfast?

How does one win, or avert, a war? Apparently, the strategy is to disarm your own citizens who have indicated by both word and action that they will not resort to violence against their own officials, to make certain they cannot defend themselves, even against true enemies such as hostile terrorist Palestinians, who everyone now agrees may use the Withdrawal proceedings to stage attacks. Terrorize innocent families in the middle of the night. And, at the same time, “encourage” the real enemies by arming them! Now, that’s a novel way to defeat one’s enemies!! After all, enemies need all the “encouragement” they can get!! Right?

Oh yes!! Inform everyone that the PA has become peaceful in intent, because the atrocities have “slowed-down,” even though they have still not taken decisive steps to permanently disarm the terrorists. Even one rocket attack, one bombing attempt, one suicide mission plot, is still an act of terror! Since the so-called cease-fire agreement of Sharm el Sheik, the attacks have continued! Would someone like to please enlighten us as to what constitutes a cease-fire?

Yup!! The Palestinian terrorists have certainly reformed! They have cut back on the number of terror attacks, not stopped them, so we are told, and we are to congratulate them! I guess showering rockets at Israeli communities constitutes a cease-fire. Apparently so does blinding a soldier, etc, etc. Palestinian officials won’t even promise disarmament as long as Jews occupy “any Land in Palestine!” Translation? Disarmament of Jews and terror by Palestinians are legitimate in the opinion of the Palestinians, and their hand-shakes, smiles, and agreements mean they intend to make sure such continues, while hoodwinking Israel and the West! Their strategy is obviously working! They are being funded, and armed, while they continue to
terrorize! I guess a cease-fire takes various forms, at least when dealing with the ‘peaceful’ Palestinians!

Has Condoleeza Rice been given blinders to don, and earplugs to wear, while on her current foray through the Middle East? We cannot let her know that on the very day she is conducting peaceful negotiations, terrorists are making a public display of their expertise! The Withdrawal charade must be brought to an abrupt halt! And, Ariel Sharon’s covert buddies have provided the scenario to do so. I trust there is a loud public outcry demanding an investigation into the allegations that the Withdrawal Plan was hatched to divert attention away from the Greek Island Scandal, in order to save Sharon’s skin! Both those for, and those against the Withdrawal, ought to be demanding a formal non-partisan inquiery commission be struck, and all plans put on
hold until the truth is made public. Ariel Sharon, and all who may be viewed to have had a part, ought to step down while this investigation takes place, in order to preserve integrity in Israel’s government.

Because, no Israeli, no matter who they are, or where they live, should be used as a pawn in any game of corruption!
